Hazardous Waste Reduction Plans
Through its work to demonstrate the benefits of setting waste reduction targets for those industry sectors most in need, HAZRED has produced a series of sector-specific hazardous waste reduction plans. Developed by industry and environmental experts, the plans are a key outcome of the project and can help any small business in the EU working in one of the following six industry sectors:
- General construction/building
- Treatment and/or coating of metals
- Maintenance and repair of motor vehicles
- Photographic and print processing
- Manufacture of speciality organic chemicals
- Manufacture of machinery and equipment
Following the principles of the waste hierarchy, the plans offer a practical framework for an achievable and measurable programme of waste reduction – which can result in quantifiable environmental and financial savings. Best Practice Catalogue
The HAZRED Best Practice Catalogue is another important outcome of the project and could be of real value to businesses. Developed in collaboration with project partner Envirowise, the Catalogue demonstrates the benefits of addressing hazardous waste production through the use of examples of best practice from HAZRED, as well as other previously published case studies. Any company interested in hazardous waste reduction is encouraged to make use of the resource, which can be searched by sector for waste types, techniques and actions taken.

Disclaimer: The HAZRED Best Practice Catalogue is an Access database, containing information on a range of documents available in the public domain concerning best practice in the handling of hazardous wastes. In order to download and use the Catalogue, you will require a version of the Access database programme from Microsoft.
Built in Microsoft Access 2000, the Catalogue is compatible with later versions of Access up to Access 2003, and is believed to be compatible with Access 2007, although this has not been fully verified. It is not compatible with Access 97 or earlier versions. To allow the full functionality of the database to operate you must allow macros to be enabled on ‘start up’ as the database navigation and filtering tools depend on these. If a warning message appears on ‘start up’, you will need to click the option to enable macros.
The Catalogue is designed to be viewed at a screen resolution of 1280 x 960. At lower resolutions you may need to scroll the screen to see all fields. The HAZRED Best Practice Catalogue was designed by AEA Consulting for the Envirowise and HAZRED Programmes. It is offered as a free information tool - Envirowise and HAZRED accept no responsibility for omissions or errors.
