HAZRED has received funding to demonstrate the effectiveness of a sector driven approach to preventing and reducing hazardous waste. To make the most of the funding and to generate robust findings, it was decided to work with 120 small businesses across six priority sectors in the UK and Ireland. These sectors are:

  1. General construction / building
  2. Treatment and/or coating of metals
  3. Maintenance and repair of motor vehicles
  4. Photographic / Print processing
  5. Manufacture of speciality organic chemicals
  6. Manufacture of machinery and equipment

The six priority sectors were chosen using a methodology developed by the project team in consultation with a wide range of environmental and industry experts.

The following influencing factors were considered:

  • Volume of hazardous waste produced by sector
  • Opportunities to prevent or reduce hazardous waste
  • Number of SMEs in sector
  • Existing environmental support available to sector
  • Representation by trade bodies
  • Transferability of learnings to other sectors

It is intended that the HAZRED findings will be transferable to other sectors in the UK and across the EU.
